‘Pay on time discounts’ are penalties in disguise. People who pay only a day late can end up paying hundreds of dollars more a year for the exact same energy supply. The advertised percentage rate of ‘discounts’ (penalties) are continuing to grow and so too impact of the penalties on those who can least afford their supply. Late payment fees for energy are banned in Victoria and we think these penalties in disguise should be too.
Consumer Action is gathering information as to how pay on time ‘discounts’ are impacting people supported by community organisations. If you have assisted a client who has had to pay more because they did not pay on time we would like to speak to them about getting permission to request their last year of bills. If your client is happy to assist we please contact Jake Lilley (email@example.com) or 03 9670 5088 for further information.
